2892 Miles to Go is an Explorer Program supported by National Geographic Society with a mission to enact narrative change and place-based education programs within classrooms and communities led by community leaders themselves. Through the support of the National Geographic Society, 2892 provides opportunities for youth storytellers to collaborate with local leaders, educators, activists, advocates, and change-makers to reclaim community histories and stories together. Through this work, our hope is to contribute to the creation of more informed, empathic, and united communities.
Ogden City is the first city in Utah to participate in this project! Ogden City is producing and developing a podcast that explores the stories of our many diverse communities. Telling these stories will create a more informed, empathetic, and united community in Ogden City, and at the heart of it all will be the youth. This podcast will be run by youth (15-20 years of age) in Ogden City who will be mentored by experienced professionals who will teach them skills that can be utilized in academic and career pursuits. Alongside the practical skills that youth participants will gain, is the intrinsic benefit they will experience from an increased sense of belonging in Ogden City by learning about the untold stories from the communities and residents that came before them that make Ogden unique.
The podcast consists of 4 mini-series, each highlighting a different community that contributes to what makes Ogden unique. They will consist of:
o Multigeneration Ogdenites
o The history of the Union Station
o Residents with disabilities; to celebrate the School for the Deaf and Blind
o New Americans
